I remember when I bought my first car. As soon as I decided which car to buy, I started noticing the car everywhere, though I had never noticed it before.
The same thing happened when a yoga teacher once told me my right hip was tight. I never thought about the tightness of my hip before. I started noticing it in my practice and paying more attention to my movements.
Only when we focus on something do we begin to pay attention. Unfortunately, there is only so much we can focus on at any given moment. If we pay attention to something that means many other things go unnoticed.
A great example of this is the Selective Attention Test. It’s a fascinating experiment. If you’ve never heard of it or tried it, you must watch the video before you continue reading.
The experiment reveals two important facts about the majority of us.
- We are missing a lot of what goes on around us.
- We have no clue of what we’re missing.
As a reminder for today, focus on the things you want to see.
That includes happiness, love, joy, compassion, success, hope; it’s all there. We just get so caught up with one problem after another, paying attention to the wrong things, that we forget to see all the goodness around us.
Lot of love,
